Holmes’ Four Hits Aides Win

Auburn, N.Y.- Jake Holmes ‘ four-hit performance helped the Crosscutters to a 4-3 win over the Doubledays to open a three-game road series.

Ben Aklinski set the tone for the Cutters offense, doubling to deep right-center on the first pitch of the game from Tim Cate. After a Jonathan Guzman single put Aklinski on 3rd base, Ben Pelletier plated the first run with a sacrifice fly to center giving the Cutters a 1-0 lead, moving Guzman to 2nd base in the process.

Danny Mayer followed up with a RBI double down the left field line, scoring Guzman to up the Cutters lead to 2-0, as Mayer continued to swing a hot, run producing bat. Mayer was scored on a RBI double to deep center field off the bat ofJake Holmes, his first hit as a Crosscutter and first RBI, giving the Cutters a 3-0 advantage in the top of the 1st inning.

Jhordany Mezquita took advantage of the lead, retiring the first six batters that he faced before running into command issues in the 3rd inning, surrendering a run, before leaving the bases loaded with a 3-1 lead.

Mezquita ran into more troubles in the bottom of the 4th inning, allowing two more runs to score as the Doubledays battled bat to tie the game at 3-3. On the play in which the tying run scored, it appeared that Adalberto Carrillo‘s single down the 3rd base line was foul, but ruled fair by the home plate umpire, allowing Jamori Blash to score the tying run.

Cutters manager Pat Borders came out to talk with the plate umpire, and after a lengthy, uneventful conversation, Borders was ejected from the game.

Jhordany Mezquita got out of the 4th with the game tied and then pitched a perfect 5th inning, his final of the start. He finished the night allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five in a no decision.

Tyler Carr entered in the 6th inning and tossed a pair of scoreless frames of relief, allowing two hits a walk and striking out three as he would earn his second win of the season.

Danny Mayer sparked the Crosscutters offense in the top of the 8th inning, using his 2nd double of the afternoon to get into scoring position. After Jake Holmes singled to right field, moving Mayer to 3rd base, Brayan Gonzalez plated the go-ahead run with a RBI ground out, giving the Cutters a 4-3 lead.

Randy Alcantara worked a pair of scoreless frames to close out the game and earn his 3rd save of the season, but it wasn’t easy. Alcantara saw the tying run reach 3d base and the winning run reach 1st with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, before getting Pablo O’Connor to fly out to center field and end the ball game.

The Crosscutters continue their series against the Auburn Doubledays tomorrow evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Falcon Park.
