Maton’s First Lifts Cutters

Williamsport, PA — Nick Maton drilled his first home run of the season, helping the Cutters to their 3-1 win over the Auburn Doubledays in the series opener.

Will Stewart entered his start looking to build off his previous win, and was able to work out of a couple jams in two of the first three innings of his outing.

Stewart ran into a little trouble in the 4th inning however, allowing a two-out walk to Andres Martinez, who would swipe 2nd base on a ball in the dirt with Armond Upshaw at the plate. With Martinez at 2nd, Upshaw ripped a single into right-center, plating Martinez to give the Doubledays the 1-0 advantage. Upshaw took 3rd base on a fielding error by Adam Haseley, but Stewart would strand the runner.

Williamsport backed the efforts of their starter in the bottom of the 5th, getting a one-out triple from Rodolfo Duran, his 2nd of the season to spark the offense. With Duran at 3rdBrian Mims drove a Alex Troop offering deep to left, allowing Duran to tag and score to tie the game at 1-1, giving Mims his 3rd RBI of the season.

Nick Maton followed the sacrifice fly with a blast off the back wall of the Cutters bullpen in right field, giving the Crosscutters their first lead t 2-1. It was Maton’s first professional round-tripper and gave him his 8th RBI on the year.

David Parkinson entered in the top of the 6th inning and silenced the Doubledays bats for the next three innings, not allowing a run or a hit, while striking out three over his three innings of relief, picking up his third hold of the season.

Adam Haseley led off the bottom of the 8th inning with a single to left, advanced to 2nd on a walk drawn by Greg Pickett and scored on a throwing error by Auburn 1st basemen Jake Scudder on a ball hit by Josh Stephen to cap the Williamsport scoring, and giving the Cutters an insurance run.
