Pitching Dominates Doubledays

Williamsport, P.A. – For the second-straight night, Crosscutters pitching denied the DoubleDays from crossing home plate, as Williamsport blanked Auburn 2-0, earning the three-game series sweep.

Jhordany Mezquita picked up where Gustavo Armas left off, delivering another strong start in his Crosscutters debut.

Mezquita allowed a first inning single to Jason Martinson, but was able to induce the inning-ending double play to toss a scoreless first inning.

After working around a base hit in a scoreless second inning, picking up a pair of strike outs, Mezquita struck out the side in a perfect third inning of work.

Mezquita ran into his only trouble of the night in the top of the 5th inning, allowing a pair of two-out single, but after a quick mound visit from pitching coach Hector Berrios, Mezquita struck out Cole Daily to end the frame and keeping the game score free.

Mezquita finished the night tossing five shutout frames, allowing four hits and striking out six. He finished the night not allowing a single walk.

The Crosscutters had multiple scoring chance in the early stages of the game, getting a triple in the bottom of the 1st from Rafael Marchan, but failing to score.

Abdallah Aris relieved Mezquita in the sixth inning and was outstanding, blanking the DoubleDays over three innings. The southpaw allowed one base runner on a single, and struck out a pair of Auburn batters to earn his first win in his first outing for Williamsport.

Williamsport started the second inning with back-to-back singles but had the next three batters retired, failing to score in the frame.

The Cutters also failed to score runners in scoring position in the forth inning after a Seth Lancaster double and in the fifth, leaving Matt Vierling on 2nd base.

Rafael Marchan was able to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the eighth inning, singling through the drawn in infield to score Vierling, who led off the frame with a triple to left-center, giving the Cutters a 1-0 lead. It was Marchan’s 2nd RBI of the season.

Ben Pelleiter added an insurance run in the eighth, doubling off of the glove of Ricardo Mendez in deep center, scoring Marchan to extend the lead to 2-0. For Pelletier, it was his 2nd RBI on the season.

Luis Ramirez closed the door in the top of the ninth inning, striking out two Auburn batters in a perfect outing to earn his 2nd save of the season.
