Penn College women’s tennis team to open
The last of the Pennsylvania College of Technology spring sports teams is scheduled to step into action this week when the women’s tennis squad travels to College of St. Elizabeth at 1 p.m. Saturday in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Also, this week conference play is set to begin for the college’s baseball and softball teams.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Senior Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station, returns at the No. 1 singles position and junior Morgan Blackwell, of Beech Creek, at No. 2, for the Wildcats. Sophomore Jane Herman, of Greencastle, will open at No. 3 and sophomore Valerie Kubalak, of Spring Mills, will be at No. 4, while junior Hanna Williams, of Marion, New York, is expected to take the No. 5 spot. According to first-year coach John Machak, the last singles position still is up in the air.
“We’re excited to have Jane back, she’s a very competitive player. By getting Jane and Valerie back on the squad it gives us the depth that we really need to compete. … With that top four, I think we’re actually going to be very competitive,” Machak said.
Doubles teams will consist of Stabley-Blackwell at No. 1 and Herman-Kubalak at No. 2 with the third spot still open.
In a preseason poll of the conference’s coaches, Penn College was picked to finish fifth among seven teams. In order, they are: Penn State Abington, Penn State Berks, Wells College, Lancaster Bible College, Penn College, Bryn Athyn College and St. Elizabeth.
During its fall season, Penn College went 0-7.
In North Eastern Athletic Conference action this week: At St. Elizabeth (0-0 overall through Sunday), 1 p.m. Saturday.
Last meeting vs. St. Elizabeth: Penn College won last March 19, 8-1.
GOLF
The team’s scheduled season-opening match at Bryn Athyn was postponed and Penn College now is slated to begin Fridayhosting Lycoming College and Susquehanna University at Williamsport Country Club. The Bryn Athyn match will be played April 2.
BASEBALL
On Monday in a non-conference, late addition to their schedule, the Wildcats lost 6-5 at Muhlenberg College when the home team scored in the bottom of the ninth. Penn College led 3-0 after four innings before Muhlenberg came back. Ben Flicker, of Topton, and Brittan Kittle, of Millville, each had two hits for the Wildcats and scored a run.
At Penn State DuBois on Thursday in another non-conference, late-schedule addition, Penn College won, 4-3. Richard Lennon, of Morgantown, had two hits, one a double, and drove in two runs, including the winning run with a single in the eighth inning. Pitcher Aaron Palmer, of Hanover, allowed three hits in five innings and improved to 2-0 for the Wildcats.
At Pitt-Bradford on Friday, Penn College won by scores of 8-7 and 6-3 in six innings to improve to 8-4 on the season. The first game was highlighted by a seven-run third inning, during which Lennon and Cole Hofmann, of Newtown, each had two-run singles. In the nightcap, the Wildcats had a four-run fourth with Cody Cline, of Waynesboro, delivering a two-run double.

SOFTBALL

Last meeting vs. Keuka College: Penn College won, 2-1, and lost, 6-1, last April 30. Penn College lost, 3-0, and won, 7-4, last April 20.
ARCHERY
Competing March 11-12 at the Indoor Nationals at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Penn College archers finished with two firsts, two seconds and two thirds while closing out the indoor portion of their season.
Markus Weber, of La Plate, Maryland, won the male compound event with a score of 1,160 and Chelsea Douglas, of East Greenville, captured the female compound competition with a score of 1,101. Weber now is ranked eighth nationally and Douglas is ranked 10th.
Taking second place were Tyler Schoonover, of Bradford, in male compound with a score of 1,144, and Andrew Rupp, of Dayton, in male bowhunter with a score of 1,158. Rupp is ranked fifth nationally and Schoonover is ranked 11th.
Coming in third were John Kleinfelter, of Lebanon, with a score of 1,141 (he is ranked eighth nationally), and Erica Gause, of Bloomsburg, with a score of 1,109 (she is ranked seventh in the nation).
Also for Penn College in:
Male compound — Aaron Cummings, of Mountville, was sixth with an 1,118 (30th nationally); Tim Lamont, of Eldred, was seventh with a 1,114 (31st nationally); and Logan Booth, of New Kensington, ninth with a 1,097 (39th nationally).
Female compound — Sabrina Toplovich, of Spring Creek, was ninth with a 1,009 (30th nationally), and Rylee Butler, of Bellefonte, 10th with a 997 (31st nationally).
Male bowhunter — Adam Thomas, of Shade Gap, fourth with a 1,104 (23rd nationally), and Justin Rinehimer, of Mountain Top, fifth with a 1,103 (25th nationally).
Female bowhunter — Sarah Decker, of Williamsport, eighth with a 497 (39th nationally).
Male recurve — Tanner Huff, of Altoona, seventh with a 916 (55th nationally); Josh Maring, of Brookville, 10th with an 881 (67th nationally); and Nick Daniels, of Levittown, 15th with a 673 score (97th nationally).
“Now that the indoor season is over, we are sitting very good going into our outdoor season,” coach Chad Karstetter said.
“These scores are going to be very important going into Eastern Regionals and outdoor nationals. They will combine the indoor total score to the Eastern Regional score to find the All-East Regional champions and also take that same score and add it to our outdoor national score to find the All-Americans.
“We have quite a few archers sitting very good for All-American status,” Karstetter continued.
“Going into our outdoor season I am hoping the weather cooperates … so we can get our equipment tuned and sighted in for the first event at James Madison University (April 1-2),” he added.
