Penn College women snap long volleyball loss streak
Nineteen. That is a number that Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s volleyball players can erase from their minds after they snapped a two-season, 19-match loss streak Saturday to highlight the week’s action.

Women’s volleyball
In its most competitive match of the season to date, Penn College lost to Marywood University, 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 25-14, 15-25, 15-10), Wednesday at Misericordia University. Statistically against Marywood, the Wildcats led in kills 49-45, assists 46-40 and digs 96-80. Penn College individual leaders were Coryn Oswald of Langhorne with 21 kills, Mackenzie Mahler of Quakertown with 41 assists and Hannah Burnett of Middlebury Center with 43 digs. Oswald also had 15 digs. In its second match of the night, against Misericordia, Penn College lost, 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-17), to drop to 0-6 on the season. The home team held advantages in points 49-25, kills 29-19 and service aces 14-5. For the Wildcats, Burnett notched 22 digs, Oswald 10 kills and Mahler 17 assists.
Saturday in a home nonconference triangular, the Wildcats dropped their opener against Alfred State, 3-0 (25-20, 25-5, 27-25), before topping Cairn University, 3-2 (14-25, 25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 15-10), to go to 1-7 on the season. In the first match, Alfred led in kills 33-22, aces 13-4, blocks 8-1 and assists 31-21, while Penn College led in digs 46-38. Individually for Penn College Oswald had six kills, Mahler 18 assists and Burnett 17 digs. Against Cairn, Penn College led in kills 47-36, aces 18-9, assists 46-34 and digs 74-70. Individually for the Wildcats, Oswald had 14 kills and Emalie Marnati of Canton 10 kills, Burnett eight aces, Mahler 38 assists and Burnett 23 digs. Prior to Saturday, the last Penn College win came last Sept. 29 against Cheyney University.
In North Eastern Athletic Conference action this week (record through Sunday): Host Penn State Berks (5-4 overall, 0-0 NEAC), 7 p.m. Thursday; at Lancaster Bible College (3-7 overall, 0-0 NEAC), 11 a.m. Saturday.

Men’s soccer
Opening its North Eastern Athletic Conference season at Penn State Harrisburg Saturday, the Wildcats took an early lead 8:39 into the match on a goal by Daniel Jackson of Phoenixville on an assist from Josiah Potts of Brooklyn, New York. But the home team fought back with two second-half goals for a 2-1 win in the first meeting ever between the two teams. PS Harrisburg led in shots 12-6 (6-3 on goal) and corner kicks 6-1.
Hosting Shenandoah University Sunday in nonconference action, Penn College lost, 2-1, to fall to 0-5 overall. Colton Wartman of Ellicott City, Maryland, put the Wildcats on the scoreboard on an assist from Potts in the first half, before Shenandoah came back with two second-half goals for the win. The Wildcats led in shots 14-6 (6-5 on goal). Shenandoah led in corner kicks 7-1.

Women’s soccer
At Penn State Harrisburg Saturday in its conference opener, Penn College lost, 2-1 in two overtimes. After a scoreless first half, PS Harrisburg struck in the 72nd minute before the Wildcats tied the match on a goal by Tiffany Brown of Mechanicsburg at 79:01 on an assist by Kaelan Cronin of Leesport. Following a shot-free and scoreless first overtime period, the home team got two shots in the second OT and scored the game-winner in the 101st minute. PS Harrisburg led in shots 23-10 (9-4 on goal) and in corner kicks 7-2.
Back home with Alfred State Sunday in nonconference play, the Wildcats won, 5-1, to go to 1-3-1 overall. Tiffany Brown scored three goals while Dominique Brown of Benton scored once and assisted on two of Tiffany Brown’s scores. Cronan added the final Penn College goal. Statistically, Penn College led in shots 32-11 (17-5 on goal). Each team had five corner kicks.

Golf
In its season-opener at the Keuka College Fall Invitational Wednesday at Lakeside Country Club in Penn Yan, New York, Penn College finished fourth in a 10-team field with a 325 total. Oswego State took team honors with a 309. Austin Moscariello of New Columbia led the Wildcats with a fifth-place finish among 50 golfers after shooting a 77, five strokes behind the medalist. Also for Penn College, Alex Acree of Brookville shot an 81, Jordan Wise of McClure an 83, Sean McNamara of Lancaster an 84 and Eli Francic of Franklin an 89.
Men’s-women’s tennis
In a home match Saturday against Elizabethtown College, the men lost, 7-2, and the women fell, 9-0, in their season opener.
Winning for the men’s team, now 0-2 on the season, were Tucker Phillippe-Johansson of Mattituck, New York, at No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Blake Whitmire of Shickshinny and Luke Whitenight of Berwick.
